School of Automation & Electric

The students connect to a virtual machine and can use the software 24×7 for 6 weeks per each course. The course material and video presentations are part of the Virtual Machine. Each assignment will be verified by the professor, commented and marked.

The professor also has access to all the VM as such will conduct verifications as required. A video conference will be held for each major topic.

There are two Certificates under this school:

  1. Automation
  2. Electrical Power

Each certificate has four courses. The success is guaranteed because the real Software will be used and the course is instructed by industry experts.
For Automation certificate Rockwell Automation Software for Control Logix 5000 is used.

For Electrical Power Certificate, Easy Power is used.

There is no need for software installation and there is NO COST for the Software, neither Rockwell neither Easy Power!

The second video is showing the AFGD Automation Line which is installed in many locations: Toronto; Quebec City; Calgary in Canada and Detroit Michigan; Clear Water Florida and Tennessee in USA. The automation line presented in located in Quebec City – Multivere Quebec Company.

The last Automation Curse is a Project and the student will design and program the SERVO System the Logic and the HMI. In this way the student will have the skills and know how to become a successful INTEGRATOR.

Category 1: Automation Certificate

The Four Course are:

  1. PLC / PAC and HMI Programming- 6 weeks access to the VM
  2. PLC / PAC and HMI Advanced Programming-6 weeks access to the VM
  3. Advanced HMI—SCADA & DCS, 6 weeks access to the VM
  4. Automation Integration-6 weeks access to VM

After Completion of the four courses the student will be able to integrate a new Automation based on the technical Specification.
The Student will be able to Select the proper Controller, Size the SERVO System and Program the Human Interface for an Application using Rockwell and Allen Bradley Latest Technology.

Category 2: Electrical Power Certificate

The Electrical Power Certificate is made of four courses of 6 weeks, each student will have access 24×7 to a VM during this time. The software used for the courses is Easy Power. After completion of the four courses the students will learn how to design a medium voltage or low voltage electrical system.

Who should attend:
Electrical Engineers who want to specialize in Power System Design and Maintenance.

The Four courses are:

  1. Substations and Switchyards – 6 weeks access to the Easy Power VM
  2. Bulk Electrical System and Distributed Generation- 6 weeks access to Easy Power VM
  3. Protection and Coordination
  4. Electrical System Modeling using Easy Power

All Factory following CSA Z462 are required to perform ARC FLASH Calculation every 5 years or when a major change happened in the electrical system, therefore they need the calculation to display new ARC FLASH Labels in order to comply with the standard.

Category 1: Automation Certificate

PLC / PAC and HMI Programming- 6 weeks access to the VM

This course will explain step by step the Ladder Logic Programming using Emulator 5000 and Studio 5000 programming environment.

There will be a video for each major topic and a manual to be followed. The student will be connected to the VM for 6 weeks for each course.

Also a WEB-EX interaction during the course to connect with the students.

After each topic the student will have to program the controller CLX 5000 for a certain application including basic programming of the HIM using FTAP View.

After completion of these course you will be able to:

  • Write Ladder Logix Application for CLX 5000
  • Program a touch screen or computer for application HMI
  • Establish communication with different controllers using RS-Linx Classic.

PLC / PAC and HMI Advanced Programming-6 weeks access to the VM

This course is a natural continuation of the first course. The student will learn advanced instructions of programming in all four languages, Ladder Logic; FBD-Functional Block Diagram; SFC-Sequential Functional Chart and Structured text. For example, PID and PIDE Close loop control application for a fast process.

Also the students will learn to program a multitasking application, using continuous; periodic and event TASK and design multiscreen HMI application. The SERVO Motor basic programming also will be covered in this course.

The student has access 6 weeks to the VM to complete all the assignments and practice to gain maximum experience.

There is a course material for the course and a Video presenting each major topic, also there will be an interaction with the students based on WEB-EX.

 

Advanced HMI—SCADA & DCS, 6 weeks access to the VM

This course will teach the student the power of Plant PAX and Add-On Instructions created by Rockwell for wide area network Monitoring and control Systems.

The student will learn how to create HMI using PAX and Network or distributed networks FTAP, data collection using SQL Server and different control systems required for positioning of the control valve to regulate the flow or the positional hysteresis regulator for temperature control. Manual Tuning and Alarm Server also will be presented.

The student has access 6 weeks to the VM to complete all the assignments and practice to gain maximum experience.

There is a course material for the course and a Video presenting each major topic, also there will be an interaction with the students based on WEB-EX.

 

Automation Integration-6 weeks access to VM

This course will upgrade your skills to the INTEGRATOR LEVEL.

You will learn how to size the servo system using MOTION ANALIZER; select the proper Controller; I/O Cards and sensors using Integrated Architection Builder-IAB, and program the main logic using SFC and communication between the machines on the automation line using produced and consumed tags.

The student will design and program the machine based on the Technical Specification of the AFGD LINE.

Also will program the HMI including animation using PAX and Add-On Instructions.

The student has access 6 weeks to the VM to complete all the assignments and practice to gain maximum experience.

There is a course material for the course and a Video presenting each major topic, also there will be an interaction with the students based on WEB-EX.

Category 2: Electrical Power Certificate

Substations and Switchyards – 6 weeks access to the Easy Power VM

This course will teach the substation types and main components of a substation. Power Transformers, testing power transformers, Circuit Breakers; Fuses; GIS Substation; Switchyards; Surge Arrestor Protection and Insulation Coordination

Also the Student will learn the Substation Grounding requirements based o IEEE 80. There is a manual available for this course also for each major topic there is a video presentation available.

The basics of the EASY POWER Modeling and calculation also will be presented in this course. After the completion of each section of the course the student will have to pass a quiz. During the 6 weeks duration of the course the student will have access to the VM and Easy Power.

At the end of this course the student will be asked to model a distribution substation with the breaker and a half configuration using EASY POWER.

Bulk Electrical System and Distributed Generation- 6 weeks access to Easy Power VM

This course will present the typical configurations and requirements for protection of the Bulk Electrical System, for different voltage and power level. Also the Distributed Generation types and typical protections are presented, introducing the concept of zoning and pilot protection.

Requirement for Distributed Generation regarding power quality and Harmonics at the PCC Point -Point of Common Coupling, IEEE-519, 2014. Typical Harmonic Generation Systems – Power Electronics used in Line inverters, Power Factor Correction Systems and methods of harmonics elimination will be discussed.

Power Generation Systems and Backup Power Systems using battery bank and UPS will be also presented. Large Motor Starting study using Easy Power will be also demonstrated in this course. The course manual is available in the VM, each major topic is presented in a video presenting the practical implementation and the study done using EASY POWER

Protection and Coordination

This Course will teach the student the typical protection for the power electrical equipment:

  • Power Transformers
  • Substations
  • Cables and Bus Bars
  • Generators
  • Motors

The student will also learn the methods of neutral grounding of the major electrical equipment and influence over the capacitive charging current and voltage fluctuation during a fault. All types of faults will be discussed phase to ground; phase to phase to ground or symmetrical three phase fault. Direct; reverse and zero sequence components are also discussed.

There is a manual available for the course, each major topic of the course is also presented in a dedicated video.

Electrical System Modeling using Easy Power

This course will teach the students the importance of the Electrical System modeling, how to create a Safety operation procedure using Easy Power; and how to perform field data collection and how to validate an electrical model. Also the course will focus on methods for configuration management of the electrical model.

This course is a project the student needs to design a complex substation based on the Technical Specifications and perform all the required study using EASY POWER.

  • Load Flow Calculation: Sizing and Voltage drop; Active and reactive power balance, stability study
  • Select the proper grounding method of the equipment
  • Short Circuit Calculation, half cycle; three cycles and thirty cycles
  • Protection Coordination
  • ARC FLASH calculation using IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E, and generation of the ARC FLASH Labels
  • Harmonics and voltage fluctuation Study
  • Power Factor compensation Study
