Program Description

Our “Corrosion Basics, Detection and Prevention Program” is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge in different aspects of corrosion protection technologies used in Energy industry.
The preliminary courses of this series, explain fundamentals of corrosion and how electrochemistry plays a vital role on this adverse phenomena. This course provides an understanding of Cathodic Protection (CP) methods used in pipelines, tanks and their internals, Survey techniques and NACE criteria to assess CP protection systems. The trainees will also learn about the theory behind a selected number of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods, and applicable standards. They will also be able to apply some of this theory in NDT testing through hands-on training environment. This program also offers an introduction to advanced topics in corrosion control techniques with special applications such as Modified Cathodic Protection of Stainless Steels as well as an introduction to Anodic Protection.
This Program comprises of eleven progressive modules. Upon the successful completion, the students will be awarded an Advanced Certificate.

By the end of this program you will have learned:

  • The theoretical and practical fundamentals of corrosion
  • Galvanic series and its implications on corrosion
  • Advantages and disadvantages of a sacrificial CP system versus an impressed current system
  • NACE criteria for pipeline protection, “instant off” potential and “-100 mV” criteria
  • The importance of corrosion protection systems used for industrial components
  • The theoretical and practical fundamentals of corrosion protection systems
  • Introduction to a number of typical anodes and reference electrodes used for CP
  • Detection of corrosion by Non Destructive Testing field equipment and its limitations
  • Basic techniques used to assess effects of soil conditions
  • Surveying methods used to inspect pipelines and process equipment
  • Alternative approaches toward corrosion protection such as Anodic Protection and modified CP for stainless steels
